Handy Cart Program

Thanks to a generous grant from the Surrey Foundation, we can offer "Handy Carts" to our clients to assist them in getting their hampers home. These new, 2-wheeled carts offer our clients added safety, convenience and dignity when transporting their food hampers home.

Many of our clients rely on walking, public transport, bikes, taxis or borrowed vehicles to get to and from the food bank. Our hampers can often weigh over 70 lbs and include cans, juice or beverages, frozen food and fruit and vegetables. Bulky and heavy food bags can pose a transport and safety challenge,
especially for those who are elderly, disabled, those with health challenges, pregnant women or families with small children. Priority to receive a cart is given to these individuals or families.

Clients must apply and be approved for a cart. While the carts remain the property of Surrey Food Bank, our clients are welcome to keep the carts at their homes and use them for each food bank visit. Clients have commented that the carts are very handy for other personal uses such as grocery shopping and taking laundry to the laundromat. Some of our special-needs volunteers have also received carts which enables them to get back and forth to volunteer and be part of the food bank team.
